/LumberJocks Challenge 01

LumberJocks is an internet community of woodworkers who share a common thread. They enjoy sharing with one another, they appreciate one anothers work, and a good challenge doesnt go unanswered. Their love of challenges is evident because they were challenged by LumberJocks members. Many members immediately went to the shop to plan and to persuade others to reveal their ideas.

The challenge was to take the Thorsen House Table (Issue #160), from February 2007, and build a project with the Greene & Greene design while adding personal design details. We knew from the chatter on the LumberJocks web site the challenge was going to be great.

LumberJocks members usually judge themselves. This time, however, the editors were handed the honor. As the projects made their way onto the web site, we realized the task was not going to be easy. We knew that we had a difficult job ahead of us when the deadline passed.

After careful scrutiny we awarded the top position. That honor goes to Neil Lamens. In the LumberJocks circle, as well as elsewhere, he is known as Furniturologist. Lamens has a history in woodworking that began in his college days at Oswego University in New York. The woodworking bug followed him throughout his career until choices finally lead him to where he is today. Click here to read his story.

Lamens included a drawer and we liked that the pegs were added to the drawer. This continued the Greene & Greene design. He also modified the piece to be more practical for his purposes.

Also, the honorable-mention tables are very nice. John Hoyt’s entry (he is jackh to LumberJocks), was very elegant and constructed according to plan. He would have won the prize if this was a contest for reproduction. We particularly liked the way he used different species of mahogany to highlight aspects of the table. It would have been a great idea for the Brothers Greene.

Mark Schroeder submitted the table

The LumberJocks’ schroeder (aka schroeder) displays many of the original design ideas. He also decided to add a drawer on the table. It was nice to conceal it. We are particularly appreciative of the book-matched shelf top and all the extra work that was put into it.

Salutes to all entries. Everyone did great work. Visit their challenge 01 web site to see all the entries from the LumberJocks Community. But, while youre there, check out the rest of the site. Keep an eye out for future challenges by the LumberJocks.

We are grateful to everyone who took part.
